Duties

This position plans, directs, implements, and supervises the staff and activities associated with the Paramedic Program, and coordinates the program’s activities between Malcolm X College, the Chicago Fire Department, and the Hospital Consortium.  Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, ensuring courses are successfully taught by instructors; supervising staff; recruiting and maintaining student enrollment; providing student services as needed; planning and maintaining budgets; and evaluating the program for accreditation and eligibility for external program funding.

  • Instructs students in theory and practical skills:  Establishes, maintains, and ensures curriculum is delivered as intended; obtains institutional support and approval for curriculum and program initiatives; oversees development of class schedules, course sequences, classroom assignments, skills sessions, and clinical assignments; and coordinates activities and processes required for future accreditation.  Ensures that program curriculum adheres to current and future paramedic educational requirements from Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Student Support Services:  Advocates student needs; promotes fair and equal treatment of student before entrance process and throughout program participation; advises and counsels prospective applicants; assists students with necessary support activities; reviews and responds to student concerns and/or complaints; recommends remedial activities or disciplinary measures for students as needed; encourages student scholarship, professional development, and community service activities; and assists students and graduates with transition to professional role.
  • Program Development:  Promotes and represents the program at both College and EMS organizational meetings; plans, directs, and implements program policies and activities; initiates and maintains regular contact with external agencies and institutions that effect the program operations; presents and responds to the parties making inquiries about the program, activities, and/or staff; assesses the effectiveness of the program evaluation process and develops program promotional materials for attracting and retaining students. 
  • Directs and provides staff development through recruiting and selects applicants for vacancies. Provides direction and supervision to part-time instructors and clerical staff, including disciplinary action when necessary.   Provides opportunities for developing staff production.    
  • Determines needs, rationale, and costs of program operations, maintains expenses of the program; and requests funds from a variety of grants or other sources as needed. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  1. Currently licensed in the State of Illinois as an EMT-Paramedic with paramedic preceptor experience is required or a registered practicing nurse with experience in EMS education and experience.
  2. Candidates should possess at least a Bachelor’s degree.
  3. Three to five years of experience as health care provider within Emergency Medical Services is required. 
  4. Previous instructional experience highly desirable.
  5. Above average abilities to organize, plan, execute, implement, and evaluate academic programs.
  6. Must be able to work well with employees at all levels of the organization, in addition to students and other customers.  Must be able to handle all situations with tact, persuasiveness, and diplomacy. 
  7. Ability to form and maintain contacts with external organizations (local, regional, national), individuals, and alumni in order to effectively implement and evaluate the EMT & Paramedic program.
  8. Excellent written and verbal communication necessary.  Must be able to effectively represent the program, college, and District.  Must be able to write reports and other material clearly and accurately. 
  9. Previous budget development experience preferred.
  10. Must be self-directed and innovative, able to assess current operations in an effort to improve the goals of the office.  Must be able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  11. Ability to operate computers and use software applications.
